VDTR Open Research Day
Held once per semester, the Open Research Day is a cornerstone of our School. It brings PhD students and supervisors together to present research, receive feedback, build presentation skills, and network across disciplines. The event showcases the thematic diversity of our community.
Important information
- Language: English
- Registration: on the VDTR website, usually 6 weeks in advance.
- Attendance is verified via an attendance list; email VDTR in advance for justified exceptions (online attendance is possible for people outside of Austria).
- Regular attendance at the Open Research Day is required to access VDTR funding (see below).
How to earn ECTS
At each Open Research Day, you can earn ECTS credits through different modes of participation.
Presentation (2 ECTS):
- 15 to 20 minute talk in English (request exceptions by email to VDTR)
- Abstract submitted at registration
- Slides due at least one week before
- Prepare questions for the discussion
Chairing a panel (1 ECTS):
- Introduce speakers and topics
- Moderate the discussion
- Submit a 1.5-page reflection within 2 weeks (graded Pass/Fail)
Reflection paper (1 ECTS):
- 4–5 pages due within 2 weeks (graded Pass/Fail)
- Evaluation focuses on originality, critical reflection, interdisciplinarity, and links to your thesis
Attendance and Funding
Please note: regular attendance at Open Research Days is required to access VDTR funding.
- You must have attended at least one Open Research Day to be eligible for funding.
- Receiving funding does not remove the obligation to continue regular attendance at Open Research Days.
- Generally, attendance at each Open Research Day is expected; up to two excused absences are allowed with a valid reason (email VDTR before the event).
- Attendance is counted only for full-day presence.
- Commitment to the School (event participation, organizational help, etc.) is considered in funding decisions.
