Admission

The VDTR stands for high quality supervision of its doctoral students, especially for interdisciplinary research in the fields of theology and religious studies. There are different types of doctoral students and they can all become members of the School. Religious or denominational affiliation is irrelevant for admission to the VDTR.

To become a member of the Vienna Doctoral School of Theology and Research on Religion, you must:

If, as a doctoral student, you have not yet given the Faculty Public Presentation (FÖP), you must obtain the support of your supervisor and send the completed and signed admission form and an outline of the doctoral project to contact.vdtr@univie.ac.at.

If you have already successfully completed the FÖP, you will need the support of your supervisor and send the completed and signed admission form to contact.vdtr@univie.ac.at.

After successful admission, you will be able to benefit from the services and support offered by the VDTR. We are looking forward to welcoming you!

Three ways of being a PhD student in the VDTR

1. Doctoral studies funded by the VDTR

VDTR-funded PhD students have a pre-doc position at the University of Vienna under the supervision of a VDTR member. As a VDTR member, you will benefit from the Doctoral School services and can participate in VDTR activities. If you participate in the annual Open Day, you can also apply for funding for travel and editing costs as well as for self-organized activities (peer activities) and apply for a completion scholarship.

As a VDTR-funded doctoral student you automatically become a member of the Doctoral School.

2. Funded doctoral studies

Funded doctoral students have a pre-doc position under the supervision of a VDTR member at the University of Vienna, funded by the university or by third parties. As a VDTR member, you will benefit from the Doctoral School services and can participate in VDTR activities. If you participate in the annual Open Day, you can also apply for funding for travel and editing costs as well as for self-organized activities (peer activities) and apply for a completion scholarship.

3. Doctoral studies not funded by the University of Vienna

Doctoral students who are not funded by the University of Vienna can also become members of the Doctoral School. As a VDTR member, you will benefit from the services offered by the Doctoral School and can participate in VDTR activities. If you participate in the annual Open Day, you can also apply for funding for travel and editing costs as well as for self-organized activities (peer activities) and apply for a completion scholarship.
